Social Drivers of Health: “What are they, why do they matter, and how to address them through care coordination”

Description: Did you know that 80% of a person’s health and well being is determined outside of clinical settings? Learn how the social drivers of health impact the whole person, and how integrated care coordination services managed by community health workers can address disparities created by the marginalization of at-risk individuals and populations.

Webinar Date: This was presented as part of OHIMA's 2023 Virtual Coding Seminar that was held on September 29, 2023.

Speakers: Heidi Christman & Dr. Tanikka Price

Heidi Christman is the Chief Operations Officer at Health Impact Ohio, a regional healthcare improvement collaborative, in whose mission she truly believes: “Optimal health for all people in every community.” Heidi’s background includes work in healthcare policy and legislation at the state and national level. She started as an aide to the Chair of the Healthcare Access and Affordability Committee in the Ohio House of Representatives. Her responsibilities included overall management of constituent affairs, as well as managing the committee, whose purpose was to craft healthcare reform legislation for the state of Ohio.
From the public sector, Heidi transitioned to the private sector, where she served as the Vice President of Grassroots Strategies at Baker Nonprofit Management. In her role, Heidi provided advocacy, lobbying, association management and event management to several healthcare and education non-profits around the state of Ohio. Her work included advocacy for access to healthcare for underserved populations in Ohio and nationwide, including working with partners to advocate for the passage of national healthcare reform legislation.
As COO of Health Impact Ohio, Heidi manages the operations and communications of the organization. She is responsible for coordinating media, social media, blog, and newsletter content with her team. She also oversees staff operations, dynamics, and workflows in partnership with the CEO, Carrie Baker. Most recently, she is serving as a lead on a $15 million funding opportunity from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Ohio Department of health called “Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities.” Christman coordinates the dozens of training courses for a statewide group of 200 community health workers to support their work in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic in their communities. She also works closely with Baker and Health Impact Ohio’s Operations and Communications staff team to manage several aspects of the project, including evaluation, stakeholder surveys and focus groups, and reporting. Finally, in working on a lean, yet agile team, Christman enjoys showcasing her creative side to do graphic design and marketing for Health Impact Ohio.
Volunteer board positions in the community include serving as co-treasurer on behalf of Health Impact Ohio for the Ohio School-Based Health Alliance. She also serves on the board of directors for the Holy Trinity Lutheran Child Development Program in Upper Arlington, Ohio.
Heidi has her Bachelor's of Arts from The Ohio State University in Political Science with a minor in Communication and History. She also received her Secondary Social Studies teaching license from Ashland University. In her free time, Heidi loves spending time with her two daughters and the rest of her family and friends.

Dr. Tanikka Price uses her training as a lawyer, her passion as a motivational speaker and the knowledge she gained during her doctoral training at Northcentral University to develop curriculum to educate and train others in caring for and taking responsibility for their own health and healing.
