Description: Clinical Documentation Improvement is being embraced in varying degrees by healthcare organizations across the country. Some have found the process to be beyond valuable, while others haven't even begun to explore it. This presentation will begin with the purpose and the process of CDI to maximize reimbursement. Then, two hospital experiences with CDI will be reviewed: one in Minnesota and one in Connecticut. Learn what each has learned, what their best practices are, and how their CDI team is organized and utilized. These two success stories will be inspiring! The differences between inpatient and outpatient CDI will also be discussed.

Speaker: Cindy Edgerton, RHIA, MEd, MHA's professional background includes 23 years of experience as an educator and Program Director in Health Information Management degree programs.  She was very involved in the early days of online education, developing one of the first online HIM associate degree programs. Currently, she is the HIM Program Director at Charter Oak State College. She enjoys mentoring new faculty. Prior to teaching, she was an HIM Manager for several healthcare organizations.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Health Information Administration with a minor in Management from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN. In 2007, she obtained her Master of Education degree with a specialization in Leadership in Higher Education from Capella University. She earned a second master’s degree, in Healthcare Administration, from Kaplan University in 2015.  She has been a Registered Health Information Administrator since 1987.
