Observation Criteria and the 2-Midnight Rule

Description: We will be presenting a very hot topic involving Observation Criteria and the correct reporting of services.  In today’s healthcare facilities many times patients are placed in the wrong patient status, which can result in a denial of a claim.  We will help the participants understand how to have a patient claim not be denied by assigning a patient to the correct level of care prior to the bill being dropped.  This will be done by covering topics such as:

  • Observation Criteria
  • Inpatient Criteria
  • Specific examples of the 2-Midnight Rule
  • Medicare Notices (MOON, IM etc.)
  • J2 and J1 status indicators
  • Physician Documentation

At the end of this session, we intend for you to have a basic understanding on the proper documentation, forms, and billing to be used to assure a patient is placed in the correct level of care or “status”.
