Don't get bogged down in volumes of data, data sets, or benchmarking metrics; learn how to turn your data into business intelligence using Tableau. This workshop will provide best practices for data visualization and in a hands-on session, participants will learn how to build a dashboard using a public dataset.

Speaker:  Susan White, PhD, RHIA, CHDA is the Administrator of Analytics at The James Cancer Hospital at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and an Associate Professor of Clinical Health and Rehabilitation Sciences in the HIMS Division at The Ohio State University. She has over 20 years of experience in the practice of healthcare financial and revenue cycle consulting in addition to her academic experience.

Dr. White is responsible for driving the design and implementation of alternative payment models for cancer as well as serving as the administrator for the Cancer Program Analytics Department. In her academic role, she teaches classes in statistics, data analytics, healthcare finance, and computer applications. Dr. White has published articles covering outcomes assessment and risk adjustment using healthcare financial and clinical data analysis, hospital benchmarking, and claims data mining. She is the author of AHIMA’s Healthcare Financial Management for Health Information and Informatics and A Practical Approach to Analyzing Healthcare Data.

She served on the Board of Directors for AHIMA and is a member of the American Statistical Association and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

PART 1: Designing Effective Dashboards

This portion of the workshop will provide best practices for data visualization for dashboard content.

Objectives:
1. Identify how data visualization will empower your audience.
2. Learn how to present a clear and concise story.
3. Discover the right visual aid for your purpose.

BONUS: Example Dashboards
45 minutes

The sound quality of this segment is low and therefore, is free! Due to the workshop being recorded in a live environment, there are large parts of it with no sound due to audience discussion. But examples of dashboards are shown so it is still worthwhile to view.

PART 2: Building Effective Dashboards
2 hours

This hands-on session will build on the design session by walking participants through building a dashboard in Tableau using a public data set. Once you have collected the data, cleaned it, linked to different data sets, and created useful metrics you're ready for the fun part. Put on your creation hat and develop a dashboard that takes your presentation to the next level.

Objectives:
1. Learn how to build worksheets that feed your dashboard.
2. Identify data formats.
3. Discover how to create visuals and calculated fields.
4. Understand the features of Tableau.

**In order to participate fully in this segment, you must have an active Tableau license. You can download a free 14-day trial here: https://www.tableau.com/products/trial. Tableau works on both Mac and PC platforms.** You may also want to consider splitting your screen or using a second computer so you can view the presentation and work in Tableau at the same time!
