Regulating the Rhythm: Coding for Cardiac Arrhythmia Procedures

Description: Does your heart “flutter” at the thought of coding for electrophysiological (EP) studies? Do you feel yourself having an attack of “tachycardia” when you are trying to determine the correct codes related to AICDs? Or perhaps your heart goes into slo-mo (bradycardia) when you are attempting to code for pacemakers. No worries, OHIMA has you covered. Join your coding colleagues for two presentations that will help alleviate the “pitter-patter” and get you on the pathway to understanding arrhythmias, and correctly assigning ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT codes related to these conditions.

First, Dr. Muhammad Afzal, a specialist in clinical cardiac electrophysiology and cardiovascular disease will present information on pacemakers, AICDs, and EP studies. He will provide information on these procedures and give insight from the provider perspective. Learn the differences between pacemakers and AICDs and gain a better understanding of what is involved with EP studies.

Next, Maria Ward, a Director of HIM Practice Excellence at AHIMA, will focus on the ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT coding related to these conditions and procedures. She will build on Dr. Afzal’s presentation and illustrate how to approach this coding from the PCS perspective by determining appropriate root operation and approach characters as well as look at the differences when assigning CPT codes.
